===== Magical Uses ===== These fragrant beans are used in love sachets and mixtures, and are also carried to attract love. Tonka beans are worn or carried to attract money, bring luck, grant courage, and ward off illnesses. To make wishes come true, hold a tonka bean in your hand, visualize your wish, and then toss the bean into running water. ===== Aromatherapy ===== Until recently, many U.S. citizens bought “vainilla” in Tijuana, thinking they were buying genuine vanilla extract. Instead, they were picking up the extract of this plant. As long ago as 1931 it was known that large doses of tonka dangerously affected the heart. Recently, tonka “vainilla” was banned for importation to the U.S., but is still sold in Mexico. Because of this recent scare, tonka “beans” were suddenly hard to find and are extremely expensive. However, some potpourri supply stores still stock them. The seeds contain large amounts of coumarin, which is a vanilla-like substance found in many other plants such as deerstongue and woodruff. The plant wasn’t named for the famous toy trucks. In magical aromatherapy, the fragrance of tonka beans can be inhaled with visualization to manifest needed money. Do this no more than once or twice a week and don’t lick the seeds! Keep out of the reach of children, who may mistake the fragrant black seeds for candy.
