The three cards can represent a variety of concepts: past-present-future, a decision with two major options and potential outcomes, even communication and interaction between different people. The images on the cards can frequently aid you in determining the meaning of a three-card spread, so you don't necessarily have to decide what each position means before you lay the cards.
