This is a lovely deck illustrated with the artwork of Victorian-era English artists Walter Crane and Earnest Fitzpatrick. Based on the Smith-Waite standard, this deck features angelic people against mythical backdrops full of flowers and nature. The costuming of the figures varies, depicting ancient Greece, Arthurian England, and the more modern Victorian styling. The style of the illustrations is generally consistent across the deck in spite of this. I also appreciate that Lo Scarabeo opted to not modernize any of the illustrations - the King of Pentacles depicts two black boys fanning a Greek man. It's common in 2023 to find such imagery abhorrent, but I personally prefer to preserve the integrity of original artwork and creative expression.

Production Quality

This is a well-made deck. I like Lo Scarabeo's mini decks - they're packaged in sturdy telescoping boxes rather than folded cardstock tuck boxes, and the cards are single-language and printed on quality smooth cardstock with a white border. I prefer bordered cards, because repeated shuffling eventually wears the edges, and a border prevents this wear from damaging the artwork. The included LWB very short, including only two or three keywords for each card. This deck follows the Smith-Waite standard closely enough that a book is unnecessary for experienced readers, but I personally prefer better LWBs. It would be interesting to learn more about the specific Crane and Fitzpatrick illustrations used for this deck.

If the lackluster LWB isn't a problem for you, this is a good buy - these mini decks are an inexpensive way to add to your collection, or keep a favorite deck in your purse or pocket for on-the-go use.
